Make recruiting a “get-to-do” task

Recently I was driving around the back country roads in Southwestern Ontario listening to the “I Love Marketing” podcast. The episode in particular was a discussion with financial guru, David Bach, author of nine New York Times bestsellers including “The Automatic Millionaire” and the founder of finishrich.com.

The discussion surrounded the ideas of living a good life, along with the values of persistence and hard work. But as I was listening, David said something that really caught my attention. It was something implementable by all recruitment managers, HR professionals, and talent acquisition specialists today. The line:

I don’t gotta do anything. I get to do something.

Recruiting is a vital responsibility of any hiring manager, but it can be a daunting, time consuming task. The pressure to find top talent for positions, filling an unexpected role quickly, or just looking at that stack of resumes waiting to be sorted through can easily make anyone feel they gotta-do something.

But this thinking immediately has negative impact. The desire becomes about getting the job done instead of doing the best job. You can feel the task looming over you instead of being excited about what you need to get done. It doesn’t even have to be the full task of recruiting that puts you in a gotta-do mood. Maybe you love interviewing candidates but dislike writing job descriptions. Change the way you think about it.

  • You don’t gotta write a job description. You get to identify and create a solution to a personnel problem.
  • You don’t gotta look through that stack of resumes. You get to improve your company by finding the right candidate.
  • You don’t gotta schedule interviews. You get to meet qualified, interesting people.

Whatever the task is, this simple change of thinking about your tasks as “gotta-do” to “get-to-do” can have a lasting impact on your job, your life, and your happiness. Give it a try next time you find yourself being faced with a task you haven’t tackled yet.
